The Afrikaans-language newspaper, Rapport, now reports that a former policeman overheard his fellow officers, who just happen to be black, say to "Throw him (Wheeler) in amongst the coloreds so they can f**k (sodomise) him".
Mnr. Wheeler's case has opened the floodgates on police brutality against civilians in South Africa. Mnr Adam Lottering, 48, of the farm Erica at Elgin, died four days after also having been assaulted in the cells after being arrested for complaints of household violence. In 2005, 35-year old Chris Schwartz of the township Rooidakke (Red roofs) died under similar circumstances. A murder docket was opened, but the investigation has not been completed yet. His co-accused alledges that the police assaulted him as well.
And a third man, 22-year-old Sakkie de Beerwas, found hanged in his cell from his shoestrings after his employer took him to the Wonderboom police station and asked a policeman to lock him up in order to "scare" him. Mnr. de Beerwas allegedly owed his employer money, and had not been arrested or charged with any crime, but was locked up by police anyway. An investigation of this case is currently ongoing.
so now the question has come, is the Police "Service" of the "new" South Africa becoming a serious threat to law-abiding citizens of South Africa?
